Yesterday, did a cross country ski up in the Laguna meadow area. Lucky that I had Red (my cattle dog) on the e-collar, because he ran off after a coyote bitch. It was by the duck pond and just as I was coming up on the dike, a second coyote was circling around Red to get a shot at him. I skied up, yelling and buzzing the boy on a 7 (usually use a 2). He finally came back, but the coyotes were lurking around for another twenty minutes or so. I put Red on the leash. He was so fired up that we began ski-joring (him pulling me) for about that period. It worked pretty good, and he slowed down on the downhills.
I thought that my adventure was about over, but as we got close to Sunrise Highway another adrenaline rush was coming our way. A german shepard and another smaller dog started barking at Red, and before long the two dogs were ganging up on my boy. In the background I could hear the owner saying "Gee, I'm really sorry, my dogs are never like that!" By that time, the german shepard had Red by the throat. I ignore the owner and wade in, wailing on the shepard and the other attacking dog. Finally, the big dog turn around and seemed to be thinking about giving me a piece of his bad temperament. I renewed my wailing on him, but with one good one I slipped backward on my back, with the skiis up. Fortunately, the owner grabs the german shepard and things settle down. I look Red over while the owner keeps apologizing. The other dog was just mouthing him, and I found no injuries. A very happy but tired John gets dog and equipment in car and departs after a peaceful wilderness experience.
