President's Report, 2010
I want to thank everyone for once
again giving me the opportunity to serve
you as your new Ski Club President. My
first 2006 thru
2008 Presidency was an exciting period,
a lot of great times and good things
happening and I am looking forward to
this next 2010-2011 tenure.
To me it is important to point out to
all our Club membership that we are
operating as a “non-profit
organization”. Nobody is making any
money, nobody is getting paid for any of
their services; everything done is
strictly through member’s volunteered
time and services. At this time I wish
to commend some of these members such
as;
• Clair Cunningham on his tremendous
work with the ULLR Newsletters
throughout the past years, and as he
continues to serve as Secretary, both
last year and this coming year.
• The great job Lynn Kramer has done
with the newsletter this last year.
• Ralph Barber on his work as the Chalet
Manager and at the same time, Chalet
Reservationist for so many, many years
and thanks for all the delicious dinners
after the work parties.
• Jerry and Melissa Stokely as Chalet
Manager and Reservationist for three
plus years and Jerry who continues to
manage the Chalet (four major
improvements that stand out in my mind
are the new overhead extension of the
Chalet entrance, the new furnace, the
new vinyl framed, double glazed windows
and replacement of the two water heaters
with a tankless water heater) and
Jerry’s management and running of the
Labor Day
work parties.
• The great job Ken Dean has done for so
many years as
Membership Chairman.
• The work Amelia Putnam, as Membership
Chairperson has done this last year (and
is continuing to do) recruiting new
members.
• The terrific job our Webmaster; John
McCormick did setting up our website and
maintaining it.
• The great programs and inspiring
articles in the newsletters on
“back country skiing” by Alvin Walter.
• Dave and Tracey Rossler’s work with
the Chalet reservations this last year.
• John Hopkins for reminding us of the
wonderful history our club has as he
told us about previous members and
activities at our last awards banquet.
And all those members who have and
continue to host our Board/ General
meetings and social events through the
years.
Finally, thanks to all the members who
participated in the Labor Day work
parties.
Dave
Annual
Banquet and Race Awards
May 18 was the
2009-2010
Annual Banquet and Awards Dinner
at La Piņata Mexican Restaurant
in Old Town. The ski club
recognized not only all members
who have helped out or raced
over the year, but some special
awards were given out:
The Unbound Award is given for
dedication to skiing, and to
making the San Diego Ski Club
great. Erin Barber, Past
President, awarded this to Dave
Byers. Dave took part in the
Labor Day work party, then
joined the club and quickly
became a Council Rep. When he
was in the hospital recovering
from a stroke he had this
spring, his first words included
“We need to hurry up and get our
Season Passes!”
The Bull and Bear Award is given
out by the Race Director, Jerry
Stokely, for the member with the
best “The heck with it– I’m
going skiing” attitude. This
year, Tom Bundgard won the
award. Tom gold medaled in many
of his
races this year, all on a bum
knee.

Chalet Report for July, 2010
The Chalet party at Phil’s BBQ is
only a few days away (July 20th) and we
have only 8 reservations. It’s really
hard to plan an event like this if
people don’t RSVP. Please RSVP if you
are planning to go.
I want to thank Dave and Tracey Rossler
for doing the reservations for the last
year. It’s no easy job, and a lot to
juggle with their work schedules. Their
work doing the reservations for the last
year is truly appreciated. The
reservations for the Chalet
are transferring from the Rosslers to
Jim Patzold. During the transition
process I will be doing reservations for
a few weeks.
Regarding payments, some members using
the Chalet continue to pay on a very
tardy basis. This causes the
reservations person to have to follow up
and chase down the payments, sometimes
more than once. This is a lot of extra
work. Remember, you expect a prompt
return of your call for reservations.
How about the same courtesy when
you get
back in sending in a check for the
number of days you reserved and didn’t
cancel, and for the correct amount?
As I am auditing the lastyear’s
payments, reservations and stays, I am
finding that some people don’t pay at
all unless they are called. This is
completely unacceptable. We shouldn’t
have to tell you the obvious but the
Chalet consumes water, electricity,
propane, supplies, taxes, insurance and
maintenance. It can only sustain itself
if everyone pays the correct amount,
and on time. Please, what’s with the
lax attitudes? You expect a lot from the
volunteers, how about making sure that
as a very minimum, you do your part and
take care of business when you return?
Don’t be surprised if I put you on COD
if we have to chase you down. By the way
that means “Bring me a check before you
get the combo."
So for this next year, please try to
make it easier on our already
overburdened system and send in checks
promptly for the right amount of money
with
whom- member or guest, adult or child,
and for what dates. Cancel if you are
not going to stay, or
you owe.
If you are planning to come to the Labor
Day work party, please RSVP to me.
Jerry

there is a box that says "Find a
Yahoo Group" type sdskiclub.
4) Hit Search.
5) Our group should pop up. Click
Join This Group under the
logo.

FWSA Convention Report by
Lynn Kramer
June 10-13 was the Far West Ski
Association 78th Annual Convention at
the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort and Spa
in Indian Wells, CA. Tom and Miyuki
Bundgard and Erik Hunsaker and myself
represented the San Diego Ski Club.

Erik Hunsaker
and Lynn Kramer
The first night of the convention was
the Silent Auction and Travel Expo. Many
1 to 7 day ski trips to the worlds best
destinations were donated by those
resorts. The trips were auctioned off,
and proceeds went to the FWSA Athletic
Scholarship Fund for teenagers. Over
$40,000 was raised. The US Adaptive
Recreation Center were present as
runners, and are also a beneficiary of
FWSA. Trips were bid by delegates, at
about half of retail cost.
Saturday morning was a bank of Travel
Expo appointments. Most clubs tend to go
on ski trips together, but since SDSC
has the chalet as our primary
destination, I tried to get appointments
with companies that would cater to our
club. I found two companies; ski.com and
skigroup.net that offer open dates for
all-inclusive ski
trips. For example, Skigroup.net is
offering 7 nights lodging and 5days
skiing at Steamboat for about
$700 including airport transfer.
Saturday afternoon was to be devoted to
meetings. I went to a panel of people
who had been involved in skiing for
years, including Doug Pfieffer, Skiing
Magazine Editor in Chief, and Walt
Roessing, Ski & Travel Journalist
formerly with the San Francisco
Examiner. The panel had a chance to tell
us how it waswhen they were coming up in
their career.
I also went to a Social Media class on
how to promote your ski club through the
internet. We learned about how to use
Facebook, Yahoo Groups, Meetup (we use
both of these websites for recruitment
and connections), as well as some up-
coming sites for online bill-pay.
Of these, our club uses Yahoo Groups the
most. If you have not already, you
should log in to sdskiclub and create a
user name. Through the site, we list
calendar events with reminders, like for
the upcoming Chalet
Anniversary. In addition, members can
hook up for rides to Mammoth or local
skiing.
Saturday night was the dance. Our theme
this year was “Thanks for the Memories.”
Most
people were dressed up in some kind of
crazy costume. I wasn’t and still am not
sure what the theme meant, but the food
was good, alcohol was flowing, and the
DJ had most of the crowd on the dance
floor doing the Macarena.
Sunday was all business, with the
election of next year’s board of
directors.
Miyuki and Tom Bundgard
If you are interested in learning
leadership skills, or if you like to
travel to ski destinations, eat, drink,
or dance, you should consider attending
the convention next year.
